2009 Hurricane Season and Names

The cool, crisp weather here in Charleston over the last few days has been welcome respite from the heat and humidity. I’ve heard a lot of people complaining about the weather over the last few days, but I’ll take this weather over 95 degrees and 95% humidity any day. Besides, the hot summer heat will soon return and bring with it conditions that are ripe for hurricane formation. The 2009 Hurricane season starts in a just over a week on June 1. They are actually monitoring the low pressure system moving over Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico for possible tropical development.

Below is the list of hurricane names for the 2009 season. These lists have been generated by the National Hurricane Center since 1953. Originally, the lists only consisted of female names but that was changed in 1979 and the lists now alternate between male and female. Some names get retired if the storms cause large amounts of damage and deaths. Last year Ike and Gustav were retired.
