The Krispy Kreme Challenge

krispykremeWith the annual Cooper River Bridge run approaching this weekend, there are probably enough articles and blog posts out there already so I thought I’d post about a different kind of run that I’d would love to see happen here in Charleston some day.

It’s called the Krispy Kreme Challenge. It started in 2004 at NC State with only 15 participants. Over the next few years the event caught on and for this year’s race they had to cap the registration at 5,500 participants.

How does the race/challenge work? Well, participants start out by running two miles from the NC State campus to a local Krispy Kreme where runners must consume one dozen glazed donuts, then run the two miles back to the starting line. The goal is to complete the run and under an hour, and more importantly, not regurgitate the dozen donuts. That can be a difficult task. A dozen Krispy Kreme donuts pack a vomit inducing punch which includes 2,400 calories and 144 grams of fat.

ESPN has a fabulous video feature on the race that aired this past weekend. There is a registration fee of $16.96. The event is a fundraiser and this year’s the race raised $35,000 for the North Carolina Children’s Hospital. The winner completed the race in 28 minutes. His secret was to fast for two days prior to the run ingesting only water and multi-vitamins.
