Lovely Ladies of the LPGA Tour: 2009 Edition

The LPGA Tour kicks off the 2009 season with the SBS Open on February 12-15 in lovely Oahu, Hawaii. Although the Ginn Tribute will not be returning to Charleston this year, I’m still going to be following my favorite lady golfers. Young, talented, and attractive as ever, here’s where these ladies stand heading into 2009.

Paula Creamer

creamer_08fields_3bPaula won a career-high four LPGA events and made more then $1.8 million in in 2008. Most would consider that a very successful season. However, for a player of Paula’s skill and charisma, winning one of the four major championships is her main priority and she came up short in 2008. Her closest call was the U.S. Women’s Open where she entered the final round one shot off the lead only to fade with a final round 78. Paula has established herself as the most popular and iconic player on tour. Her main goal is to win majors and 2009 will be a disappointment if she comes up short again.

Natalie Gulbis

natalie_gulbis_20081Natalie claimed her first LPGA victory in 2007 at the Evian Masters and but failed to follow that up with any victories in 2008. Her best performance at the majors was a tie for 9th at the British Open. Off course, Natalie could never win another tournament and she’ll still be one of the most popular players on tour. Her good looks, sultry outfits, and many off-the-course endorsements, which included two seasons of her very own reality show,  will keep her popular for years to come. Hopefully her game will come around and she can win a few more tournaments and compete in the majors.

Morgan Pressel

morgan_pressel_gfwMorgan’s breakthrough win came in 2007 when she won her  first tournament and the season’s first major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship. She followed that up in 2008 with a win a the Kapalua LPGA Classic. Her best finish in the majors in 2008 was a tie for 6th at the LPGA Championship. Morgan is young, feisty, and has the talent to be one of the top players on tour.

Michelle Wie

Although I didn’t mention Michelle in my 2008 Lovely Ladies post, she was one of my favorites a few years ago. Plagued with injuries that affected her game and some bad PR decisions, the last couple of years have been tumultuous for Michelle. She finally did the right thing in December by officially earning her spot on tour by passing the grueling LPGA Qualifying School (she had been playing on the tour using sponsor exemptions and was never officially a member). With the injuries behind her and a bit more maturity, 2008 could be a breakout year for Michelle.
