Professional Golf Coming Back to Charleston/Daniel Island

The announcement earlier this summer that the LGPA’s Ginn Tribute would not be returning to Charleston next year left a big void in professional golfing events coming to LowCountry. Sure we have the PGA Championship at Kiawah’s Ocean Course on the calendar, but that isn’t until 2012. We also have the PGA Tour’s Verizon Heritage down at Harbor Town every year, but that’s a good 2+ hour trek. So what’s a golf fan to do to get their local, pro-caliber tournament fix until then?

Golf fans will be delighted to know that the Nationwide Tour Championship is coming to the Daniel Island Club’s Ralston Creek Golf Course on Oct 22-25.

The Daniel Island Club

This is an excellent tournament for us to have here in Charleston because it is the final tournament of the year on the Nationwide Tour. The top 60 golfers on the tour’s money list will compete in a 4 round, no cut, stroke play event with the top 25 earning a spot on the 2010 PGA Tour. This format will offer some great drama and unique storylines that we probably wouldn’t see from just a normal Nationwide Tour event. Although the winner will receive $180,000 for first prize, the coveted PGA Tour card for the 2010 season is what these guys will really be playing for. All four rounds will be broadcasted on the Golf Channel giving our region some nice publicity.

The Nationwide Tour is essentially the minor leagues for the PGA Tour but has shown to be fertile proving grounds for up and coming golfers. Master Champion Zach Johnson, two-time Heritage winner Boo Weekly, and US Ryder Cup member Brandt Snedeker are some of the more popular and successful PGA Tour members who got their careers rolling on the Nationwide Tour.

This will be the 2nd Nationwide Tour event to come to the Daniel Island Club. Back in 2006 the club hosted the PalmettoPride Classic, but that tournament was cancelled after only one year.
