Blog Action Day: A Little Perspective on Poverty

What is Blog Action Day? I didn’t know either until this morning.  You can learn more about it here, or just get the gist by reading the official description:

Today thousands of bloggers will unite to discuss a single issue – poverty. We aim to raise awareness, initiate action and to shake the web!

I thought I would throw my thoughts into this cause with a quick post that aims to remind us to put some perspective on our lives. With our economy sputtering and unemployment numbers rising throughout the country, things may seem dire. But the United States is the wealthiest country in the world. It’s easy to forget that we make up such a small percentage of the world’s population and many people, both in our country and throughout the world, are less fortunate than us.

If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head, and a place to sleep tonight, you are richer than 75% of this world.

And if you have money in the bank, in your wallet or purse, and spare change in a dish someplace, you are among the top 5% of the worlds wealthy.

With poverty often comes poor healthcare and violence so keep these stats in mind as well:

Did you know that if you woke up this morning with more health then illness you are more blessed than the 1 million people who won’t survive the week?

If you attended church over the weekend without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death you are more blessed than almost 3 billion people in the world.

No matter how bad you think things are, if you are reading this, you should be very grateful for all you have.
