NHL, Stingrays Open 2008-2009 Season

The 2008-2009 NHL Hockey season officially commenced this weekend with two games being played in Europe. NHL poster boy Sidney Crosby led the Penguins to a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over Ottawa in Stockholm. The second game saw the New York Rangers defeat Tampa Bay 2-1 in Prague.

Next to another mediocre season of Clemson football, nothing gets me more excited in the realm of sports this time of year then NHL hockey. Despite living in a southern coastal city, there are a surprising number of options to get your hockey fix here in the Lowcountry.  Many of the Carolina Hurricanes games are broadcasted on the Sports South Network and some Atlanta Thrasher games can be seen on Turner South. Then there is the national coverage that Versus broadcasts in HD on a weekly basis.

And off course there is our local hockey team the Charleston Stingrays. The Rays are coming off very successful season that saw them capture the South Division crown before coming up short in the American Conference Finals. The Rays open their season on the road this Wednesday, October 8. Their home opener is October 18. If you haven’t checked out the Stingrays live and in person at the North Charleston Coliseum, I would highly recommend catching a game this season. Even if hockey isn’t your thing, the live product is immensely entertaining to any sports fan. Tickets are cheap, seats are close to the action, it is a family friendly environment, and good times are had by all.

If sports video games are your thing, then don’t pass up Electronic Arts’ latest hockey offerings in NHL ’08 or NHL ’09. They are highly regarded as some of the best sports video games ever made, capturing the look and feel of the real game and combining it with the addictive gameplay that made the series popular back in its glory days of the early 90’s.
